24 Hour Census
2011
In just one day, 1110 women, youth and children across BC were sheltered and supported by the 124 programs that participated in the 2011 census. Aside from providing support in-person, the Violence Against Women (VAW) programs received 1461 calls, emails and texts from people asking for support or wanting information about the programs. Advocates in the programs educated 305 people about violence against women and its’ impacts on women, children and communities. IN TOTAL, THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PROGRAMS TOUCHED THE LIVES OF 2876 PEOPLE, IN JUST ONE DAY!

2010
On November 24th, 2010 in Violence Against Women’s programs across BC, 2271 people’s lives were directly affected.
1081 adults, youth and children sought support. 651 women, youth and children were sheltered from violence in Transition House, Safe Home and Second Stage Programs. 320 youth and children were supported in Children Who Witness Abuse Programs. 880 calls for support were answered.
Still…672 women, men, youth and children were unable to get the support or safe shelter they needed. But, if these services did not exist, thousands more people would be without support or information about violence against women.

2009
BC Society of Transition Houses conducted its first 24 Hour Census of Violence Against Women’s Services in BC and the Yukon in November 3rd, 2009. The census provides an unduplicated snapshot of the number of adults, youth and children seeking support in Violence Against Women’s programs among BCSTH’s Membership. A total of 119 programs responded to the 2009 survey.
On this day, 484 women, youth and children sought refuge from violence in Transitional House, Second Stage House and Safe Home programs in BC and the Yukon. Another 335 women, youth, children and men sought support after experiencing violence from Children Who Witness Abuse programs in BC and the Yukon. Without the 119 programs that responded to this survey, these 819 people would not have received the support they needed. For some, the consequences may have been fatal.
